A Single Leaf

Tolkien drawing of a flowering tree

“He used to spend a long time on a single leaf, trying to catch its shape, and its sheen, and the glistening of dewdrops on its edges.”

J.R.R. Tolkien, “Leaf by Niggle”

  • “Wild blow the winds of war”: Tolkien’s Fall of Arthur

[Can there be spoilers in an Arthurian tale? I don’t know if my review would count as a spoiler, but if you’re worried about such things, you might want to proceed with caution.] In a darkening world, tides are flowing fast and winds sweeping into the west while ghostly apparitions ride through the skies. Tolkien’s […]

  • Calls For Papers: Tolkien

One proposal deadline is a few days away; one a few months away; and one just passed by without my realizing it, but I’m going to post all three CFPs anyway. (Maybe late proposals will be accepted?). With a proposal deadline of June 15, a call has gone out from Dr. Brad Eden for essays […]

  • Well, I’m back.

Clearly, I underestimated how time-consuming it would be to set up a blog and a Twitter feed for my university department at the same time that I was trying to do the same for myself. But now that I’ve got the department project running smoothly, I can turn my attention back to this blog. I’ve […]

  • Tolkien’s Fall of Arthur publication confirmed

A couple of months ago, I was speculating about clues that Tolkien’s Fall of Arthur would finally be published next spring and wondering what it would contain. Now, a notice has appeared on the HarperCollins site confirming that the editor will indeed be Christopher Tolkien and that the work will appear in May 2013.

  • Invoking the spirit of Elizabeth Elstob

“What has a Woman to do with Learning?”*  That was a question that Elizabeth Elstob had to deal with in her lifetime (1683-1756), as her study of languages and of Old English in particular existed in precarious circumstances relying, it seems, on the support and encouragement of her brother William and a few friends. Even […]
